The American Association of Exporters and Importers last week bestowed its Trade Warrior Award on Kevin Smith, who recently retired as director of customs for General Motors.
Smith accepted an early retirement package in November as the troubled automaker downsizes its workforce to cut costs.
His career included a stint on the Commercial Operations Advisory Committee to the Department of Homeland Security, Treasury and Customs. Smith has also participated in working groups that are helping Customs develop the Automated Commercial Environment.
Smith received the award, given to someone who has made a difference in promoting international trade, at AAEI's winter conference in Miami, according to the organization's newsletter. Recent recipients include Art Litman, since retired from FedEx Trade Networks, and Toyota's Marian Duntley.
