Zhuhai Airport 2008 cargo volume up 4pc

Feb 13, 2009 Logistics

SOUTHERN China's Zhuhai Airport, which is jointly managed by the Zhuhai municipal government and Hong Kong Airport Authority, handled 11,140 tonnes of cargo in 2008, up four per cent year on year, Logistics Week reported.

The airport's passenger volume rose eight per cent to 1.12 million, surpassing the national average and with aircraft movement up 17 per cent to 11,108 flights.

Affected by weakening global economy, high fuel prices most of the year, a disastrous snow storm, an earthquake and the Olympics, mainland China's air cargo and passenger volume growth last year were slowing down month by month. But Zhuhai Airport has successfully widened its cargo sources by launching new lines, increasing frequencies of the existing lines and attracting airlines to take it as operations base.

An unidentified person in charge of the airport operating company said they are facing stiffer challenge during 2009 with worsening world economy, but the airport will continue to seek every possibility to expand its market and will better serve its customers with more developed traffic network.
