Indian airports to develop 10-year plan for air freight

THE Airports Authority of India (AAI) has started working on 10-year plan to stimulate the air cargo market and has stated projects to create air hubs nationwide.


PriceWaterhouse Cooper is said to have been appointed to prepare an Air Cargo Policy - Vision 2020, which when finished, AAI will give final shape to it and then submit it for government approval, reports Livemint, The Wall Street Journal.


It noted that projects already started to develop India's air freight infrastructure include a modern cargo handling system at the Kolkata airport. The state-run airport has also set in motion the process of creating an integrated cargo terminal at the Chennai, according to an unidentified source said, who added Amritsar would soon have a modern cargo terminal with a fully-automated storage and retrieval system linked to customs to facilitate clearance procedures.


Furthermore, work is already said to be underway to turn Nagpur Airport into a national and global cargo and passenger hub, the report said.
