Cochin truck strike over parking fee

Jan 12, 2009 Logistics

A local truck strike in the Port of Cochin is into its fourth day, bringing operations at the south Indian port to a standstill.

Drayage truckers are protesting against a parking fee the port authority is charging for containers that sit more than six hours in the port area. The fee is 15 rupees (30 cents) per hour for 40-foot container and 10 rupees (20 cents) per hour for 20-footers. According to the Hindu Business Line, the port recently opened a container truck parking area, but a union representative of area truckers said the fee for that lot was considered excessive and left truckers with no other option but to park in the port area. The union rep also said six hours wasn't enough time to complete unloading and loading procedures in the terminal.

The strike in Cochin is unaffiliated with a nationwide strike by members of the All India Motor Transport Congress, which has on strike since Monday over high diesel and tire prices.

A 30-year veteran of the freight transportation industry, Moss was vice president of operations for Con-Way Freight’s central area.

He succeeds Scott J. Engers, who is retiring as chief counsel and top employee relations executive.

Succeeding Moss as central area operations vice president is Paul Lorensen, a 20-year Con-way veteran.
