Frankfurt Airport volume drops 8pc second month running

DESPITE nine months of growth this year, the traffic slowdown at Frankfurt Airport has dropped off since October's 4.1 per cent to November's 8.2 per cent, cargo tonnage of 176,230 tons reports Newark's Journal of Commerce.


The airport owner, Fraport AG, cited the global economic slump as the reason for such a lowering of tonnage to one million for 2008, a 0.3 per cent drop year on year.


Fraport reported drops across all its airports of 7.9 per cent in the month of November to 216,541 tons, but one per cent higher overall year to date at 2.3 million tons which includes Frankfurt, Turkish, Bulgarian and Peruvian hubs.


Similar results were reported at Frankfurt-Hahn located 75 miles west of Frankfurt with strong results through to September of just under 94,000 tons, a 28 per cent increase with November drop of 12.1 per cent to 11,151 tons.


Passenger traffic fell in November fell seven per cent to 3.9 million, a decrease not seen since the air crisis of 2001.
