Pa. Gov. Rendell backs National Gateway project

Dec 9, 2008 Logistics

Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell on Friday announced his support CSX's proposed National Gateway that would create a double-stack transportation corridor connecting manufacturing centers in the Midwest with deepwater ports on the East Coast.

He made his remarks at a CSX Intermodal Terminal in Chambersburg, Pa., that he said is a prime example of the kind of economic growth that comes from investing in our infrastructure.

The National Gateway is a $700 million public-private partnership that would allow increased use of double-stack trains through upgrades to tracks, equipment and facilities, and improved clearances. It's similar to the Heartland Corridor where improvements are being made to allow increased usage of double-stack train usage on the Norfolk Southern.

The National Gateway plan envisions another new intermodal terminal in the greater Pittsburgh area.
