Daschle picked for HHS

President-elect Barack Obama has selected former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota to be Health and Human Services secretary, according to multiple media outlets, each of which indicated they had confirmed the information with multiple sources in the Obama transition and the Democratic party.

Daschle is poised to get the job barring any unforeseen disclosures from the vetting process being conducted by Obama's legal team.

Daschle has extensive expertise on health issues and wrote a book this year on health care reform. Among his responsibilities would be overseeing the Food and Drug Administration, which is charged with ensuring the safety of imported food and drug products. The agency has come under fire for taking too long to trace food-related disease outbreaks and to enforce rules against unsafe Chinese food products.
