Could Smith positively, absolutely help McCain win the election overnight

Aug 11, 2008 Logistics

A Democratic Web site called thenextcheney.com thinks it's enough of a possibility that it has listed him along with a half dozen other men and women said to be on John McCain's short list of possible vice president candidates, including Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota; Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida; former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts; Sen. John Thune of South Dakota; Carly Fiorina, the former chief executive of Hewlett-Packard; and U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia.

Last year Smith endorsed McCain, but the McCain campaign noted he was doing so as an individual, not on behalf of FedEx Corp. Smith reportedly has been involved in McCain's campaigns since a senate re-election bid in 1998, and will be a Tennessee delegate to the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., next month.
