Martin appointed president of Waterways Council

Jul 16, 2008 Logistics

The Waterways Council has hired Cornel J. Martin to serve as its next president and chief executive officer, effective Aug. 1.

Martin replaces R. Barry Palmer, who retires from the Washington-based organization at the end of the year. The Waterways Council lobbies lawmakers and policy makers to support a modern and well-maintained national system of ports and inland waterways.

Prior to his appointment, Martin served as CEO and chairman of Houma, La.-based Direct Workforce, a contract labor company serving the shipbuilding, ship repair, and oil and gas industries. Since the early 1990s, he also held senior management posts with the Canadian American Transportation System, American Classic Voyages Co., and American Waterways Operators.
