THE top 50 American trucking companies posted a 2010 revenue increases of 9.4 per cent to US$85.4 billion year on year after a 17.7 per cent decline the year before, according to Pennsylvania-based SJ Consulting Group.

Truckload carrier revenue grew 11.1 per cent compared to 9.3 per cent for parcel and same-day carriers while less-than-truckload carrier sales increased 6.4 per cent, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce.

Those experiencing revenue declines include America's third-largest truck operator YRC Worldwide, down 11 per cent to $4.3 billion, according to estimates in the consultants' report.

The Top 50 gain is still 10 per cent less than peak revenue of 2008 of $94.9 billion with only a 44 per cent recoup of revenue shortfall in 2009 of $16.8 billion. The latest recession has lost the group 15 per cent of its overall expansion of 51 per cent gained in the five-year period of 2003-2008.

The gain is in line with the LTL carriers top 25 list last month, an increase of 9.8 per cent.
