Apr 8, 2011 Logistics

VOLGA Dnepr Airlines says it has completed an urgent delivery from Stuttgart to Tokyo of a large pump to help cool the damaged reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant and bring them back under control.

The 60 tons of equipment, anboard an AN-124-100 freighter, included a truck-mounted pump produced by Germany's Putzmeister, which has a 62-metre boom, enabling it to discharge water over the edge of the reactor buildings and into the buildings from above.

The pumps may also be used for any concreting work required to stop the reactors that were damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami from leaking additional radiation into the surrounding environment.

The cooling equipment was transported to Tokyo's Narita Airport, from where it was transferred to the Tokyo Electric Power Company, the operator of the nuclear power plant.

The company added in a statement that it will deliver three more pumps to Fukushima from Stuttgart, Atlanta and Los Angeles using AN-124 Ruslan freighters.
