THE world's biggest concrete pump is being flown in by the world's biggest cargo plane, the Antonov 225, from Georgia to Japan to help smother the smouldering Fukushima nuclear reactor - Chernobyl style, reports Georgia's Augusta Chronicle.
The 190,000-pound pump, owned by Augusta's Ashmore Concrete Contractors, and made by Germany's Putzmeister, has remote controlled 70-metre boom, making it useful in radioactive environments. Once there, operators will fill the quake-struck nuclear reactor with concrete.
"There are only three of these pumps in the world, of which two are suited for this work, so time is very much a factor," Ashmore proprietor Jerry Ashmore told the Chronicle.
The pump was moved from the construction site in Aiken County, Georgia to Hanahan, South Caroline for modifications and then trucked to Atlanta where it will be loaded about the world's largest cargo plane, the Russian-made Antonov 225, which will fly it to Tokyo.
