EU raiders swoop on Deutsche Bahn for market abuse evidence

Apr 2, 2011 Logistics

AGENTS of the European Commission arrived for "unannounced inspections" at the offices of German rail operator Deutsche Bahn looking for evidence that the company was abusing its dominant position in the rail freight market.

"The commission has reason to believe that Deutsche Bahn may have breached EU anti-trust rules that prohibit the abuse of a dominant market position," said an EC spokesman.

It is alleged that Deutsche Bahn Energie, supplier of electricity for trains in Germany, is giving preferential treatment to the group's rail freight arm, reports Newark's Journal of Commerce. Deutsche Bahn, which owns DB Schenker, the global logistics and freight forwarding group, is Europe's biggest rail cargo operator with units in Britain, Poland, Spain and the Netherlands.
