AIRFORWARDERS Association (AfA), the voice of air cargo companies in the US, has awarded this year's Jim Foster Award for Excellence to American Airlines Cargo president Dave Brooks at its annual AirCargo conference in San Diego.

Since Mr Brooks headed up AA Cargo in 1996, he has led the carrier to success in 100 per cent screening of US outbound cargo on passenger flights, and kick-start a two-year campaign to help freight forwarders and other supply chain stakeholders navigate the new regulations.

His work was applauded by the AfA including his chairing in 2010 of an executive roundtable featuring panellists from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Airforwarders Association, Boeing and others to discuss the operational, security and financial implications of 100 per cent screening for shippers and logistics providers.

"I am grateful to receive this award on behalf of the many tremendously dedicated individuals who made it possible to meet the demands of the 100 per cent screening mandate," said Mr Brooks in a statement from the carrier.

Mr Brooks helped make AA Cargo the first airline in the United States to offer e-freight internationally - an industry-wide initiative facilitated by the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) that seeks to involve the industry in paperless documentation and other electronic improvements.

Said AfA executive director Brandon Fried: "The Jim Foster Award for Excellence is given each year to an exceptional individual involved in the cargo industry." The award is named in honour of the late Jim Foster, who in 1990 co-founded the Airforwarders Association.

American Airlines Cargo, a division of American Airlines, provides over 100 million pounds of weekly cargo lift capacity to major cities in the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Latin America and Asia.
