JAPANESE shipping company MOL has announced that it will provide containerships to transport aid supplies from overseas for victims of the massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan in dry containers.
"We express our heartfelt sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost loved ones in the earthquake," the shipping line's president Koichi Muto said in a statement. "At the same time, we wish the best for the survivors of the earthquake and tsunami."
The Japanese carrier pledged to transport aid delivered to container yards at overseas loading ports that the ships it operates directly call before the end of May. "As shipping capacity is limited, transport of supplies will be on a first-come first-shipped basis," it said. The aid will be delivered to ports it already calls at in Japan.
The carrier is offering to transport aid supplies donated by government bodies and state-approved aid agencies to disaster areas in the Tohoku district.
"Contacts of both consigners and consignees are clearly identified, and customs clearance procedures both at departure and arrival port, and procedures of land transport must be arranged by the consigners and consignees without fail," it added.
