Liebherr develops a new STS crane driver’s control concept

Mar 23, 2011 Logistics

Liebherr container cranes Ltd, has successfully completed the testing of a Playstation Dual Shock 3 (PS3) Controller on an operating Liebherr ship-to-shore crane following simulation and testing of the controller and associated interface software at Liebherr’s factory in Killarney, Eire.

The PS3 that can be used as an alternative crane driver’s controller, has been configured to operate in parallel with the existing driver’s console. All functions of the existing console remain active at all times, with control functions simultaneously available on the PS3 Controller.

Liebherr is considering offering this feature as an option on new cranes and the Company believes that the revolutionary concept will appeal to the younger generation of crane driver and also those who enjoy video games as well as being a realistic option for remotely operated cranes.

The PS3 r was connected via a USB interface lead to a programmed laptop PC installed behind the driver’s chair. Wireless was avoided for safety reasons. The laptop was connected to the crane control PLC by Ethernet, via the fibre optic cable.

Monitoring the connection path and the active state of the PS3 driver was implemented to improve safety during operation and in the event of a failure in either case, all control inputs assume a safe condition at the PLC.

‘Network variables’ were implemented for the process data exchange between the laptop PC and PLC. Specific programmes were created in the PLC to handle the PS3 control variables with safety features integrated in the control logic.

Several test cycles were performed on 2 x 20’ containers in twin-lift mode. The cycles included container pickup, hoist, trolley, travel, and container set-down.

The system operated as expected and after a little practice the controls were found to be operable without difficulty.
