Efforts to develop Ulyanovsk in the Volga region of western central Russia as an international air cargo hub could take a step forward next month with the planned holding of a government-backed air transport forum there.

The event, due to be held at Ulyanovsk's Vostochny airport, April 22-23, has been organised by the Ulyanovsk region's Ministry of Industry and Transportation with support from the Russian Federation's Ministry of Transportation to discuss a wide range of issues relating to Russian aviation as a whole, including "problems in the development of commercial and freight air transport in Russia".

More specifically, though, it looks likely to be used to promote the claims of Ulyanovsk - which advertises itself as "equidistance from the largest Russian cities as well as the countries of Europe and Asia" - as a potential international air freight centre.
"International airways connecting the Volga region with Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East and China pass through Ulyanovsk," pointed out the forum organisers. Servey Morozov, the governor of Ulyanovsk region, added that during the event "we will not only show but will also discuss the development of freight air transportation".

Ulyanovsk is already well-known in Asian and other international air cargo circles as the home base for Russian airline group Volga-Dnepr, which operates AN-124/IL-76 freighter charter flights and scheduled B747 freighter services on Asia-Russia-Europe routes through its AirBridgeCargo subsidiary.Efforts to develop Ulyanovsk in the Volga region of western central Russia as an international air cargo hub could take a step forward next month with the planned holding of a government-backed air transport forum there.
