Antwerp Port Authority has launched a pilot phase of an inland Automatic Identification System (AIS) for barges throughout its port area, to fine-tune the system in readiness for its use becoming obligatory in January 2012.
The port authority sees the introduction of the system increasing safety and allowing efficient vessel traffic management. The information made available - concerning the name, position, speed and direction of travel of the barge - will allow for better use of port facilities by managing berths more efficiently and optimising lock operations.
In the longer term it will be possible to monitor and direct traffic flows proactively from a barge coordination centre.
The system forms part of the authority’s “Barge Master Plan,” which aims to position barge transport better within the overall flow of freight, both commercially and in the use of facilities.
The Flemish government has undertaken to promote the system by granting subsidies for purchase and installation of the AIS equipment.
