U.S. ships with food aid en route to Haiti

The U.S. Agency for International Development said it has three ships loaded with more than 6,820 tons of food aid en route to Haiti that should arrive on or about June 4.

The shipments comprise corn/soy blend, lentils, vegetable oil and soy fortified bulgur wheat. USAID estimates that one ton of food aid should feed about 2,000 people for one day.

USAID is also supporting additional assistance to the impoverished Caribbean country by subsidizing rice prices with $1 million that, along with other donor contributions, will be used to buy rice and reduce the price per 110-pound bag from $51 to $43.

This most recent assistance is in addition to the United States annual $35 million in P.L. 480 Title II food aid for Haiti.
