Euro truck rates up marginally, analysts see solid fundamentals

Mar 1, 2011 Logistics

EUROPEAN truck rates increased 0.4 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2010, according to the Transport Market Monitor produced by the Cap Gemini consultancy.

The data indicates that the market has returned to highs experienced in 2008 and that rate recovery through 2010 has been substantial and sustained, said the study reported by the UK's Transport Intelligence.

The Transport Market Monitor attributed the increase in freight rates in 2010 to the general economic recovery although lower fuel prices also played a role.

"The economic crisis caused structural changes in the sector. The first is shippers and transport companies were forced to execute extensive cutbacks, having a positive impact on productivity. Second, the transport sector is still recovering from the significant price pressure experienced during the crisis."
