Vaigach icebreaker nears the Gulf of Finland

As of 03:00pm (MT) the nuclear-powered icebreaker "Vaigach" has passed the Island of Gotland (Sweden) and is now at about 250 km from the Gulf of Finland. According to GPS data, the ship is sailing at about 19 knots (35 km/h). So, the icebreaker can reach the western part of the Gulf this night, February 25, 2011.


Earlier reports said that Rosmorport decided to add the icebreaker that was operating in Murmansk to the fleet of 12 diesel-electric icebreakers deployed in the Gulf of Finland to escort cargo ships in extremely heavy ice conditions.
