GLOBAL transport and logistics insurer TT Club has announced a partnership with port equipment manufacturers and the cargo handling association ICHCA International to create guidance documents for safety in the industry.
The ICHCA International Safety Panel (ISP) joined with Port Equipment Manufacturers' Association (PEMA) safety committee at a meeting hosted by DP World to discuss safety, environmental and security issues.
Misdeclaration of container weights, joint safety guidelines for straddle carrier design/manufacture and baseline specifications for quay cranes were areas of concern.
TT's latest findings on major structural failures in port equipment was discussed, calling into question the lifetime of safety equipment in a recent accident.
The accuracy of weighing and latest technology for gross weight was covered since the UN's International Maritime Organisation (IMO) safety committee highlighted the industry problem.
ICHCA international safety panel chairman Mike Compton and PEMA safety committee chairman Hannu Oja joined with TT Club risk management director Peregrine Storrs-Fox in calling for industry standards and pledged to develop and publish safety information.
The ICHCA international safety panel has more than 75 industry experts world wide who meet three times a year to identify safety problems, seek new technologies, produce information sheets and good practice guides, carry out and publish research. The panel currently has more than 60 publications.
