MASSACHUSETTS based American Science and Engineering Inc (AS&E) has won a US$14 million contract from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to design and build a non-intrusive inspection (NII) system to detect explosives, drugs, money and weapons.
The DHS science and technology directorate will fund $2.2 million for the first phase of the contract with AS&E and its collaborator Canadian specialist in radiation detection, Bubble Technology Radiation.
"Material discrimination capability could be an important breakthrough for AS&E's cargo inspection offerings," said Anthony Fabiano, president and CEO in a company statement. "This award by DHS is a testament to AS&E's commitment to pioneer the most advanced inspection solutions for our nation's security requirements."
The Massachusetts-based company's best-selling mobile x-ray screening solution of the Z Backscatter Van (ZBV) has gained numerous contracts with customs agencies at ports and borders for its ability to detect explosives, plastic weapons and drugs in critical security situations.
