COLOMBO airport's groundhandler, SriLankan Cargo, moved 156,412 tonnes of import, export and transshipment cargo in 2010, the third highest amount ever and a 23 per cent increase year on year, reported the Colombo Sunday Times.
Among all types of cargo, SriLankan Cargo handled a historic high transshipment volume with a 43 per cent year-on-year increase to 26,445 tonnes through Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
"SriLankan Cargo is perfectly positioned to serve the booming economies of South Asia - including India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives - with our 'hub in the ocean' concept. With our global route network we link Europe, Middle East, the west, south east Asia and the Far East as well as the subcontinent," said SriLankan's sales chief Mohamed Fazeel.
Said cargo chief Janaka Munasinghe: "SriLankan Cargo is the sole ground handler at BIA and serves all airlines, charters, freighters, and private aircraft. In 2010 we doubled the handling capacity at our Cargo Centre by commissioning a new exports terminal, and we are now perfectly placed to serve as a cargo hub for south Asia far into the future. We now have capacity to handle up to 300,000 tonnes of cargo in a year."
