Jan 17, 2011 Logistics

Kuehne + Nagel International has bought three South American companies which specialise in perishables logistics, reported Dow Jones Newswires.

Kuehne + Nagel has agreed to take over the two Colombian companies Translago SAS and Agencia de Aduanas Excelsia Ltda, as well as Ecuador's Mastertransport SA.

By acquiring these specialised forwarders in Colombia and Ecuador, Kuehne + Nagel said it gains access to two of South America's key perishables export markets, and strengthens its position in the regional air freight markets.

Translago SAS and Agencia de Aduanas Excelsia Ltda, based in Bogota, employ 160 staff and specialise in the export of flowers and other perishables, mainly to destinations in the US, Europe and the Asia Pacific region.

With 30 specialists, Mastertransport SA is an important player in this business segment in Ecuador.

The three companies together control 75,000 tonnes of air export perishables per year.

"By combining the newly-acquired companies with our existing operations, we are achieving the leading position in the South American perishables segment," said Karl Gernandt, executive vice-chairman, Kuehne + Nagel International.
