INDIA's IndiGo Airlines is to purchase one hundred eighty A320 planes for US$15 billion, Airbus has announced.
The agreement includes 150 of the upgraded A320 aircraft with enhanced engines featuring fuel-efficient design, as well as 30 of the conventional single-aisle Toulouse design, said Airbus in a statement.
"India is one of the key growth markets of the world for aviation, and we are betting on the winners in India," Airbus sales chief John Leahy told Bloomberg in an interview.
Last year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said India's aviation market is enlarging as it serves Asia's third largest economy and local air traffic may increase four fold to 180 million passengers annually by 2020.
Airbus will begin delivering the enhanced A320s in early 2016 and projects a potential demand of 4,000 planes over 15 years. IndiGo is the first client that is committed to adopting this jet type.
