Train crash stopped Dutch-German freight movement

Jan 14, 2011 Logistics

A FREIGHT and passenger train collision on the busy Betuwe line to Germany in the Dutch town of Zevenaar delayed traffic for nine hours earlier this week according to Reuters.

The collision occurred when the trains, Deutsche Bahn-operated ICE international passenger train bound for Germany collided with a freight travelling in the opposite direction.

The impact derailed passenger carriages but left the 146 people aboard unhurt, said police.

The double-track freight line which runs between Rotterdam in the Netherlands into Germany diverted six freight trains carrying containers from Rotterdam.

Three trains joined the mixed passenger-freight network from its recall at Zwijndrecht. The Betuwe line is 160 kilometres and runs from Rotterdam to the German border at Zevenaar-Emmerich and since its opening early 2008 it now accounts for 57 per cent of freight trains into Germany.
