AN Iranian Airlines Boeing 727 with more than 100 people on board, flying from Tehran to the nation's northwest city of Orumiyeh, crashed in a snowstorm and broke into pieces in a rural area near the destination.

At least 33 people survived, said the Fars news agency, quoting BBC news and the Guardian. Fars reported the crash killed at least 72.

"According to the reports we have received, the plane was trying to land in Orumieh airport, but because of the bad weather conditions it did not succeed and went away from the airport for a second try, but it suddenly disappeared from the radar," said Iran's IRNA state news agency, citing the Guardian.

Iranian planes have had a number of accidents over the past few years, blaming on aging aircraft and poor maintenance. Also, industry experts believe the US sanctions have made the country fail to buy spare parts for maintenance or new planes from the west.
