SOUTH KOREA's Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co., Ltd has clinched a US$115 million contract to construct a runway and other facilities for a green field airport development at Duqm, a port town on the Arabian Sea in central-eastern Oman, in the Al Wusta region.

Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction (HHIC) will build the main airfield infrastructure for the airport over the next 22 months. The scope of the project, which is part of the second phase of development at the site, involves the construction of a four kilometre runway designed to code-F standards, two taxiways, a parking apron for passenger aircraft and facilities for two passenger boarding bridges, reports the Times of Oman.

In addition, HHIC has agreed to install at the airport a sophisticated air navigation and meteorology system, as well as airfield ground lighting system, fuel farm and apron fuel hydrant system.

The South Korean construction firm is said to have warded off stiff competition from other contracting heavyweights, including Athens-based Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC), India's Larsen Toubro and Turkey's Makyol.

The new airport is being developed on a 2,700 hectare site on behalf of the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation and Meteorology, which is part of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

The airport is scheduled to open in 2012, following completion of a third construction phase that will involve the building of a passenger terminal and air traffic management facility, as well as a cargo complex to handle 50,000 tonnes of air freight annually. The report said that at present the design work for the terminal building is also underway.

It said the construction of Duqm airport is part of a larger plan to build three other regional airports, namely Sohar, Ras Al Hadd and Adam, in order to connect interior regions with the capital Muscat.
