Dec 17, 2010 Logistics

THE largest railway container depot in northwest China, Xi'an Railway Container Terminal has started operation, Xinhua reported.

Being one of China's 18 railway container terminals, the facility is located at Xinzhu Station, Xi'an city's newly built railway hub. It has nine cargo loading tracks of over 1,000 metres long and a freight yard of 219,000 square metres. It is also equipped with four 40-tonne gantry cranes and cargo scanning devices.

The facility is expected to be able to handle 17.2 million tonnes of cargoes a year, including 820,000 tonnes of express cargo and 3.5 million tonnes of full-truck-load cargo.

In order to optimise the city's rail cargo capacity and bring the new facility into full play, Xi'an Railway Bureau has closed the cargo business in Xi'an East Station.
