Tajani to become Europe's Transport Commissioner

May 13, 2008 Logistics

Italian Member of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani is set to replace Jacques Barrot as Europe's Transport Commissioner.

Tajani, part of Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party, has been nominated to replace Franco Frattini, Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security, but will actually assume Barrot's portfolio, with the transport commissioner being asked by EC President Jos Manuel Barroso to take over Frattini's role. Barrot has been handling the justice, freedom and security department since Frattini went on unpaid leave on March 14 to campaign for Italy's national elections. Last Thursday, Frattini officially resigned his post in Brussels to take up the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs in the new Berlusconi government.
