EU ministers agree to set clear rules for air cargo screening

Dec 7, 2010 Logistics

EU TRANSPORT ministers from 27 member states have agreed to stipulate joint surveillance regulations in the coming weeks on air cargo and mail within and outside EU boundaries in response to the hidden air bomb threat, reports Bloomberg.

"The EU needs to address the threat of cargo originating in third countries both on an emergency and a permanent basis. Additional measures are required," said a EU transport policy paper endorsed at a recent meeting in Brussels.

The new screening approach should balance the needs for national security and for airfreight industry, avoiding stringent security checks on all air cargo and mail in Europe that hamper the normal operations.
