DESPITE rising problems of air cargo security, threatening to remove local advantages of speed, Paul Tsui, chairman of HAFFA (Hongkong Association of Freight Forwarding and Logistics Industry) said Hong Kong would be the world leading air freight hub once full year statistics were tabulated.
"We are going to replace Memphis as the number one cargo airport in the world this year even though we do not have any domestic movement," Dr Tsui told a media luncheon called to announce the March 8 - 10 Air Freight Asia conference and exhibition in Hong Kong.
"We are very optimistic that the total throughput of HKIA [Hong Kong International Airport] in 2010 is likely over four million tonnes, representing a growth of 19.5 per cent year on year," he said.
Air cargo destinations remain concentrated in the EU and America, he said, but overall volume in and out of the Asian countries has been growing substantially over the years.
Tonnage between January and October 2010 is at 3,400,000 tonnes compared with 2,674,000 tonnes moved last year in the same period, an increase of 27.2 per cent.
"We are now going to the normal trend. Therefore, the fourth quarter of 2010 will have an average growth of 15-17 per cent over 2009. For 2011, the overall volume is expected to have seven to eight per cent growth and this will be a continuous trend for the next two to three years," he said.
