Thai govt mulls cutting stake in Thai Airways

Dec 1, 2010 Logistics

The Thai government is considering cutting its stake in Thai Airways International to 49.9 percent from 51 percent, reported Reuters.

"The ministry is ready to consider that because the company has already got out of a restructuring plan and its performance has improved. If the airline is not a state enterprise, it will be more flexible and better able to compete with the private sector," said Somchai Sujjapongse, director general of the State Enterprise Policy Office of the Finance Ministry.

"It is reasonable and we are ready to consider that. We'll wait until they propose the plan and we will have to discuss with the minister."

Earlier, Thai Airways President Piyasvasti Amranand said the flag carrier is forming a plan to end state control as part of an aggressive regional expansion that includes a new mid-tier airline and a revamped fleet.
