NATO trucks are destroying Pakistan's roads, says minister

Nov 29, 2010 Logistics

PAKISTANI communications minister Arbab Alamgir claims that trucks transporting NATO containers have caused PKR82 billion (US$958.5 million) in damage to the infrastructure of the nation's communication network.

The minister said about 500 trucks travelled to Afghanistan daily from Karachi transporting supplies for NATO forces. He said those heavy trucks were damaging Pakistani roads and highways, reports the Pakistan Daily Star.

He was cited as saying the government had taken up this issue with NATO, but no progress had been made. "We will again take up the issue with NATO as our 80 per cent traffic flows through these highways which are in very bad condition due to travel by heavy containers," he said.
