Changi air cargo up 13pc to 1.5 million tonnes in 2010

MORE than 162,400 tonnes of air cargo moved through Singapore Changi Airport in October, up 5.2 per cent year on year, and representing a January-to-October increase of 13 per cent to 1.5 million tonnes.


On the passenger side, 3.58 million movements were made in October, an increase of 7.9 per cent year on year, driven by a double digit growth in passenger traffic to and from southeast Asia, northeast Asia and the Americas, according to a statement from Changi Airport Group (Singapore) Pte Ltd (CAG).


From January to October, passenger movements grew 14.5 per cent to 34.3 million, with low cost carriers accounting for 22 per cent of passenger movements. From October 31, which marked the start of the northern winter schedule, carriers added services to Hong Kong, Manila and Kuala Lumpur.


Four new services have also been launched to Tokyo's Haneda Airport, bringing to 11 the number of daily flights to the Japanese capital.


Aircraft movements were up 7.2 per cent to 22,488 in October year on year with a total of 217,382 aircraft movements from January to October, a growth of 9.9 per cent.


As of November 1, Changi served 98 airlines operating 5,100 weekly scheduled flights to more than 200 cities in 60 countries and territories.
