ICAO piles on 'complementary' level of cargo security

Nov 22, 2010 Logistics

THE UN's International Civil Aviation Organisation has introduced stringent security measures on air cargo following the foiled Yemen parcel bombing.

Its 12th revision to its Security Annex has been in development for some time and "complements a number of recent initiatives to significantly increase the level of aviation security, in a proactive and concerted manner," said its council president Roberto Kobeh Gonzalez.

Measures include more extensive screening of cargo, mail and other goods prior to boarding and offer "the strengthening of provisions related to the deployment of security equipment, the security of air traffic service providers, training programs and instructor certification systems and cyber threats," reported Cleveland, Ohio-based Air Transport World.
