FEDEX EXPRESS has acquired the logistics, distribution and express businesses of AFL Pvt Ltd in India and its affiliate, Unifreight India Pvt Ltd, for an undisclosed amount.
The acquisition of privately held AFL, including AFL Logistics and Distribution and AFL WiZ Express, "will give FedEx a more robust domestic ground network and added capabilities in India," the company said in a statement.
FedEx anticipates the deal will be completed in its third fiscal quarter, ending in February 2011, reports American Shipper.
"The acquisition supports our long-term strategy to grow our international business and better serve our customers seeking to expand or enter the Indian market," said FedEx Express CEO Michael Ducker.
AFL Logistics and Distribution provides supply chain management, warehousing, and has a ground distribution network for day-definite ground transportation of small packages and heavyweight shipments through more than 200 daily scheduled routes.
"This will provide more service options such as domestic ground and value-added services, including warehousing, logistics solutions and third party logistics, while allowing them to take advantage of an increased coverage area."
Package delivery firm AFL WiZ Express maintains a network of more than 160 service centres for more than 5,000 ZIP codes across 144 cities in India.
