Deutsche Bahn chief executive Rüdiger Grube targets a return into black figures for DB Schenker Rail in 2010. This follows an Ebit loss of EUR 189mn in 2009. In the first nine months DB Schenker Rail, Deutsche Bahn's cargo train division, increased turnover 17.8% to EUR 3.20bn (USD 4.47bn).
DB Schenker Logistics, which offers other forms of cargo transport, recorded a 26.5% increase to EUR 10.5bn.
Short-time work in DB's cargo business has fallen to less than 200 employees. In the whole of 2009, 13,500 employees were affected.
The recovery of the cargo division is likely to push Deutsche Bahn group's turnover in 2010 beyond the forecast of EUR 32bn, not including Arriva. In 2009 turnover had fallen to EUR 29.3bn, according to Logistics Finland.
