The Australian Airports Association has named Sydney Airport as Australia’s Capital City Airport of the Year.
The award was made in Adelaide last night at the Association’s Annual Awards for Aviation Industry Excellence.
The CEO of Sydney Airport, Russell Balding, said that the award was deserved recognition for all the staff at Sydney Airport.
“The last year has been one of significant achievement for Sydney Airport and this award is important recognition, by industry peers, of the airport’s staff for their work as aviation professionals,” Mr Balding said.
The award follows the successful completion of a number of important projects including the expansion and upgrade of the International Terminal and the construction of the $100 million runway safety area at the western end of the east-west runway.
Sydney Airport has also initiated significant improvements to ground transport arrangements for passengers including:
- Establishment of a new pick-up area for domestic passengers
- Introduction of 15 minutes free parking for international passengers
- Advocated for improved public transport services including reform of the fares on the Airport rail link and additional bus services
There has also been a $67 million upgrade of the airfield lighting system as well as environmental projects such as the water recycling plant at the International Terminal.
These projects are part of the $1.7 billion investment made by Sydney Airport since 2002. Passengers will continue to benefit with a further $1 billion in planned capital expenditure over the next five years.
Sydney Airport is the National Gateway and conveniently located just 8 kilometres from the CBD.
It is an important economic contributor and is on track to handle more than 35 million passengers this year–up from 23.9 million in 2002. The Sydney Airport Master Plan 2009 forecasts that passenger numbers will increase to 78.9 million by 2029.
