Hawaii air cargo up 13pc, returning to pre-recession levels

AIR CARGO volume to Hawaii airports this year is running 13 per cent higher than the levels of last year, according to state officials, reported KHNL/KGMB News, Honolulu.

"Cargo levels caught up to 2008 levels over the summer," said Jeff Chang of the state government's airports division, to the annual meeting of the Hawaii Cargo Association.

Volume has been up 14 per cent to Honolulu International Airport, Mr Chang told the meeting, but it has been up in low single digit percentages to most neighbour island airports, and down to Lanai and Molokai.

Sources with local air cargo hauliers said construction materials shipments to Honolulu have picked up but there has not yet been a commensurate increase to neighbour islands.

Young Brothers, which handles half the maritime shipping between the islands, has also seen little increase to date in shipments of construction materials, reflecting perhaps the fact that major new projects have been confined mainly to Oahu.
