Party boss tells Nanning-Guangzhou railway builders to speed up

BUILDERS of the Nanning-Guangzhou railway have been told by Guangxi provincial Communist Party secretary Guo Shengkun to finish the job and open the rail line four months ahead of schedule by January 2013 rather than by May of that year.


The railway runs through Guigang and Wuzhou city and covers 577 kilometres, 349.8 kilometres in Guangxi and 227.3 kilometres in Guangdong. It is designed convey double stacked container trains at 349.8 kilometres per hour (217 mph). Construction began in November 2008 and was expected to take four years and six months.


In the long-term, the route's cargo capacity can be raised to 20 million tonnes a year and passenger capacity 110 runs in each direction daily. Transits from Nanning to Guangzhou will be cut from 11 hours to three hours.


The cost will be borne by Guangxi and Guangdong provincial funds with and expenditure of CNY41 billion (US$6.1 billion).
