Southwest Airlines likely to focus on cargo

Oct 8, 2010 Logistics

BUDGET carrier Southwest Airlines' purchase of AirTran Airways to boost its air freight volumes has been met with a positive response, reports The Columbus Dispatch.

Gary Paine, owner of the Pilot Freight Services franchise in Gahanna believes the deal shows that Southwest has targeted air freight transportation as a money-maker, with Mr Paine saying it provides the most "trackable" service.

AirTran had exited the business prior to its acquisition, so the expectation is that the combination with Southwest will mean an even larger cargo focused airline under the direction of Southwest.
