The U.S. Transportation Department's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has proposed a substantial increase in its registration fee for domestic and international transporters of hazardous materials.
PHMSA wants to increase the fee to $2,475, plus $25 administrative fee, for registration year 2009-2010, up from $975, plus $25 administrative fee.
The agency said the fee increase is used to fund the national Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness grants program. Under the Bush administration's fiscal 2008 budget, the program costs the PHMSA about $28 million to operate.
