THE intercity high-speed railway connecting Jiangxi cities of Nanchang and Jiujiang, the first high-velocity rail service in central China, has started operation, Xinhua reported.
The Nanchang-Jiujiang railway will be connected to the existing Beijing-Kowloon, Wuhan-Kowloon, Tongling-Jiujiang railway and the Beijing-Guangzhou, Shanghai-Kunming and Xiangtang-Putian railway which are still under construction, becoming the hub of high-speed railways in Jiangxi province.
The railway cost CNY5.8 billion (US$ 865.5 million) to build, covering a distance of 135 kilometres with a designed speed of 250 kilometres per hour. It started construction in June 2007.
With operation of the new railway, travelling time between Nanchang and Jiujiang will be slashed by half to only 45 minutes, while travelling time between Nanchang and Wuhan will now take only two hours, 1.5 hours shorter than before.
