Tamil Nadu government has allotted 125 acres of land for an integrated dry port and multi-model logistic hub project of Chennai Port at Mappedu, near Sriperumbudur, Deccan Chronicle.

“The director-general of shipping has handed over US$21.99 million to the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) for this land,” said Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan. "DG Shipping has approved for 99 years the lease of the land and the $83.55 million project will be developed through PPP mode."

“As the city is facing a problem with acquiring more land near the port, the dry dock project will be helpful to meet the demands of increasing volume of container handling in future,” said Vasan.

According to the minister, Chennai port has invited expressions of interest for the development of a roll on-roll off cum multipurpose berth with a multi-level car parking facility with a capacity to park 6,000 cars.

“With more and more car manufacturers shipping out their vehicles through Chennai port, the new project is essential to become a major hub of car export,” said Vasan. “Fresh tenders will be invited for the project pertaining to Chennai-Ennore Port road connectivity. The land acquisition process is in progress,” the minister added.

On his maiden visit to the port as minister, Vasan laid the foundation stone at Gate 1 of Chennai Port for the development of a four-lane facility to reduce traffic congestion.

Chennai Port is also working on a $10.78 million windmill farm near Tirunelveli and an advanced firefighting system inside the port.
