Sep 20, 2010 Logistics

ATLANTA's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport received its 14th all-cargo carrier with South Korea's Asiana Airlines' inaugural flight for its scheduled cargo service deploying a 747-400.

Overall air cargo increased 22 per cent during the first seven months of 2010 year on year, and international freight was up 35 per cent. Asiana Airlines use of Hartsfield-Jackson follows on from Singapore Airlines Cargo, which began scheduled services from Atlanta last September.

The Korean carrier's 747 touched down to a traditional water cannon salute with a welcoming committee of the city of Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed and airport manager Robert Kennedy.

"Asiana Airlines is a world-class air cargo carrier," said Mr Reed in a statement. "The decision by the company's executives to begin scheduled cargo service to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport reflects the city's position as a leading transportation and logistics hub in the southeast."

Air cargo continues to grow at Hartsfield-Jackson with the airport winning awards for two years, including Cargo Week's Airport of the Year Award and Air Cargo World's Award of Excellence for the best North American cargo operations this year and last.
