Kier Construction has signed a tunnelling contract with MTR Corp in Hong Kong under a three-way joint venture, in which Kier holds a 50% stake, according to Railway-Technology.
The £125m ($194.5m) contract is part of the Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express rail link connecting mainland China with Hong Kong.
The project involves the sinking of two deep shafts and two 2.6km-long, 7.5m-wide railway tunnels, which will be constructed by drilling and blasting through hard rock.
UK-based Kier's JV partners include Hong Kong-based Kaden Construction and Spanish contractor Obras Subterraneas.
Construction is expected to be completed by May 2015.
