Strike at six UK airports called off

The union representing workers at six of the largest UK airports has dropped plans for industrial action after operator BAA made an improved pay offer, reported Dow Jones Newswires.

The Unite union said it would recommend a "much improved" offer to the staff, after last week giving the go-ahead for strikes that would have shut down airports including London's Heathrow.

The move follows lengthy talks hosted by the mediation service ACAS between BAA, Unite and two other unions representing fire fighters, security staff, engineers and support staff.

"Today's negotiations between Unite and BAA – with the assistance of ACAS – have been constructive and Unite is pleased to announce we are calling off the strike action at BAA's six airports," the union said.

"Details of the agreement will be made public once BAA staff have been advised of the improved offer."
