KOREAN AIR has opened a 1.46 million-square foot cargo terminal that can handle 100,000 tons annually at Navoi airport in Uzbekistan to expand its network by adding routes from Navoi this year, reports Washington DC-area based Air Transport World.
"The new Navoi Cargo Terminal has been designed based on Korean Air's state-of-the-art cargo terminals at Incheon International Airport," said company president and COO Chang Hoon Chi. "The Navoi Cargo Terminal is set to become the centre of the modern day Silk Road with its advanced airport infrastructure."
The 1.46 million-square foot terminal can handle 100,000 tons a year and features refrigerated warehouses and quarantine stations. Capacity will be upgraded to 500,000 tons annually if demand dictates, said the report.
Construction started in December 2008. Hanjin signed an agreement in May with the Uzbekistan government and Uzbekistan Airways to develop the hub and launched thrice-weekly 747-400F ICN-Navoi-Milan flights in August.
Hanjin announced in late summer it would join the project with the aim of turning Navoi into a multimodal cargo hub.
"Korean Air will spare no effort in supporting the growth of Navoi into central Asia's best logistics hub, expanding global network and practicing aggressive marketing strategies as Korean Air participates in the airport management," said Mr Chi.
